Uncomfortable but usefulThis was a buying for me as a test system for Chrome OS and it works well. The screen is just a tad too small for genuine productivity but the original build of Linux on here was pretty bad. I recommend to position the netbook build of Ubuntu. Overall good purchase for the payment.
Distinguished little netbook!
Got this last Thursday for it's portability. I have a 15.4 Toshiba too. So far, I passion it. The keyboard took a little getting used to at first, but I'm typing on it front now with a minimum of problems. It's extremely lightweight (2 lbs) and great to take around everywhere.
Linux is installed on mine and I have to say that it's fairly simple to use on here. The only issue I've had is with installing new programs and updating Adobe Show Player. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, its just that I'm not familiar with Linux.
The wifi on it is massive and very easy to set up. It picks up the signals easy and I get a strong signal display charge with.
I haven't tested the battery life yet, but I think it's rated at around 2.5 hours.
Plugged a USB coerce into it that had MP4 video files and they played right off the bat. No downloading codecs or anything.
This fashion is FAST. Quick to start up, quick to shutdown, quick to stuff programs.
As far as looks go, it's a slick little device. Mine is black. I liked the drained, but the black speakers on the side were a turnoff. It would have looked so much better all white, but this furious one is great! The speakers blend in nicely with the casing. Looks costly and the lines are clean.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with it. Not something I would replace my laptop or desktop with, but that is not the job of this scrap beauty. It's job is to be portable, lightweight, easy to use, and durable. It passes with flying colors.

As a student should I buy Asus eee pc 701 or 900?
Q: I need the opinion of those out there who have used an eee pc. I am looking for a notebook/netbook to surf the net but also to type up notes and documents, homework etc.
I think the eee pc looks good but am worried that the 701's screen may be too small or if the eee pc is suitable for what I want.
I have also been considering the acer aspire one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A: Hi Laura,
Exciting to buy a new laptop that is as cool as the EEE PC's :)
When it comes to computer hardware there is no use buying the older stuff when you can go for the newer ones for a little price difference. Go for the 900 just because you will wish for the wider screen. We're talking about 200 bucks computers and they are maybe about 20-30 dollars difference. But one important thing I learnt with EEE PC's: there are different 900 models. They have letter suffix such as HD, HA, H, A and such. I'll explain later on. But my quick answer: go for the 900HA.
Either way the EEE PC's are a very good hardware choice. They are durable, solid, stable, and the only issue was on the earlier models having too small keyboard. So if you're going to take notes you might be a little let down by the 701 or 900 that are 8.9" wide in size.
DO NOT go for ACER. You get to choose between Asus and Acer, don't go for Acer. Acer's are unreliable, unstable hardware, you will maybe end up sending it to repair too often to keep studying with it because of the let downs. Acer mounts cheap systems by ordering random cheapest generic parts and I suspect they don't care about the motherboard compatibility. This makes most Acer users complain constantly about system crashes.
About my experience with the EEE PC's, my sister and I are web designers, "programmers", big time surfers and we purchased one EEE PC 1000H with Windows XP Home, a little more than 400 dollars. I thought it was simple to just pick up a 900 but when I came to the shop I found out that the optimal choice for an EEE PC should depend on these closer specifications:
-Processor: some EEE PC's have Celeron, some have Intel Atom. The Intel Atom is a very power effective CPU rendering the autonomy to about 7 hours in power saving mode, on battery of course. 701 and 900 last up to about 3 hours with their Intel Celeron processor. The ones having the Intel Atom: 901, 900HA, 900, 1000HA, 1000H. The 70x series don't come with the Atom.
You will maybe use your laptop in power saving mode in those lecture halls that don't all have power outlets everywhere and you will appreciate the noiseless operation of the laptop. And did no one mention how awesome it is to surf in outdoors in a park for hours?!
-Display panel and size: Staring at a tiny screen during a long time will cause more eyestrain than with a larger one. With 1000H I went for the biggest 10" widescreen, the size is also 1.5" wider than the 900, making the keyboard even more convenient to use. Any EEE PC is small enough, it's great that it's so small. But only the 1000H maximizes the LCD panel size. Compared to other EEE PC's it looks like the 1000H doesn't have any speakers but it does. They are at the edges somewhere instead.
-Storage capacity: Going for the older hard disc drive storage gives 10x more storage. Even serious students fancy music and movies once in awhile, if you have no passion you have no future ;) I avoid the solid state disc SSD's. They are more durable, more power efficient, but too expensive today, small in capacity and they are not user-serviceable. You can't upgrade/replace freely. You will need to order an expensive spare part and/or have to send the laptop away to Asus authorized workshops for a few weeks / months. For flash memory I'd rather use SDHC cards that will soon cost about $2/GB, there's an SD card reader in the EEE 900 and 1000 series.
You should not care if the laptop has no bluetooth. The bluetooth adapters cost 20 bucks, maybe less, and they are as tiny as can be. Bluetooth is great between GPS, headsets, phones and things you're going to walk around while using.
So here are the different EEE PC 900 variations:
900: Celeron, 12 or 20GB SSD storage, 2.5h battery life, LOW!
900HD: Celeron, 160GB HDD storage, 3.5h battery life.
900HA: Intel Atom, 160GB HDD storage, 5h battery life, HIGH!
901: Atom, SSD, 12 or 20GB SSD storage, 8h battery life.
904HA: Atom, 160GB HDD storage, 6h battery life.
904HD: Celeron, 160GB HDD storage, 5h battery life.
1000HD: Celeron, 160GB HDD storage, 5h battery life.
1000H/HA: Atom, 160GB HDD storage, 7h battery life
Prices should be around $250 for the 900, $300 for the 901, $350-450 for the 904 and 1000.
That's why I recommend the 900HA with the atom, or a 1000H or 1000HA if you can afford the wider display! I don't recommend the 900 because of too low battery life.
I hope this helps! Good luck and have fun with the shopping!
