do not buy this laptop
I purchased this mould two years ago and immediately was dissapointed. this machine does not run vista well at all. I've since reformatted and installed xp (a hard process since dell does not support xp drivers for this machine, but if you're savvy you can find through forums) with xp it runs think twice but Still would not recommend. there are other laptops out there that perform much better. The 1721 model is primitively a big LEMON!
Threat: DELL WILL NOT HONOR THEIR WARRANTY!
I ordered a Dell Inspiron laptop 1 1/2 years ago and it worked grand until recently. The screen went black and the system would not start. Turned out that the video union card had failed.
I contacted Dell customer support to activate my next business day guarantee and after more than a week I have gotten nowhere with them. My claim has been "escalated" twice with the same excuses and choice to fix the problem. They claim they have no video cards in stock and I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for a replacement be honest, 2-3 weeks for a loaner system, or 2-3 weeks for a replacement system -- offensively my NEXT DAY warranty is anything but.
I explained that this is a mission critical system and a 2-3 week dawdle is unacceptable given the high price I paid for the next day warranty. I offered to take another convey or model of graphics card and even offered to go buy the card myself if the agreed to pay for it.
They refused to workers in any way. So, I am left with a useless laptop for 2-3 weeks until it becomes convenient for them to honor the agreement. I will never buy another Dell product again and recommend that others who are not technically experienced with fixing computers or that stress a "mission critical" system that they look elsewhere because Dell cannot be relied upon to fix broken systems in a well-timed manner.
Buy Unreserved!
I bought a very correspond to computer to the one listed here, and I am very happy with it. The problem with this particular listing is that it is way too expensive for the seal you are getting. I got my Vostro for $1000 about 2 months ago, and it is substantially faster than this one (1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM).
The true computer itself has been great. It's certainly a little bulkier than I would like it to be, but it's nice having the 15.4 inch widespread screen. I also got the 9-cell battery which adds some weight and protrudes from the back of the league slightly. Having 4 USB ports is a particularly desirable feature, and although I have only against the SIM card reader a few times, I can see how that would come in handy as well.
I ended up choosing the Vostro over Dell's Inspiron 1520/1521 -- which is in fact the same computer, but is marketed toward home users, whereas the Vostro is labeled as a 'small partnership computer' -- because at the time, the Inspiron was only offered with the Vista operating system. Also, you can customize the skimpy business computers so they don't have all the junk programs their home & office computers secure with. Overall, I was able to get more bang for my buck with the Vostro.
My advice is if you are universal to buy a Dell, buy it direct and wait for a good promotion to pop up. Try searching the internet for "Dell Coupons," and although Dell doesn't for the most part offer them, you will often be redirected to a good limited-time offer at their proper website.

Lasted ONE week...
After about one week of use, I heard crackling sounds, smelled smoke and it then died. Don't be informed if there is something wrong with my computer to cause it, but my actual Dell cord lasted 3 years. It only had issues due to me having it crinkled in a bad principle while trying to find a way to keep the plug in the backend of the computer (good thing we're not reviewing the computer itself)!!

Works, but not like a Dell
The stallion is compatible with my Dell Inspiron. It charges. There are two problems. One is when I use the computer while plugged into this charger. The charger gets exceedingly hot. I have to set the charger on something solid. Not on a couch or covers. It gets so hot, I could get burned stirring it. One time I smelled something burning and noticed it was on top of my quilt, and was emitting a hum of burning fabric. combined with a burning electrical odor. Blood-curdling! The second problem is when the battery power in the computer is down. If I use the computer while charging, the computer blinks on and off. I equitable have to close it, let the charge get to 100%, then I can use it. I don't have these problems with the Dell charger that came with it. But after a while the string gets worn. I will pay extra for the right charger next time. I will keep using it, but very deliberately.
Update: June 2010. The chargers are still working, but I am still having the same problems with them. I'm on here to out of kilter a Dell charger. I hope that one works better. I am replacing this because it gets so hot I am in reality afraid it will start a fire. It only takes an hour to get so hot I smell burning.

Computer Guy
I received the first one it worked for one load.It charged the second battery 1/2 way and quit.I called Amazon and they offered my on Easy Street back or another one.I took another one and that one didn't charge at all.I have sent both back waiting to be refunded my scratch. If you want a charger I won't tell you where to go but don't by this one.
So, my absolute laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1720. I’ve had it for about a year and a partly, and the whole term, I’ve noticed a tiny immovable uproar in the behind the scenes when using headset. It’s not persevering, but cordial of a speck whiny morse encrypt unmarred. Bugged me, but I never was masterly to find a fix. Because the obstreperous is much less unmistakeable when continual Linux than it is when constant Windows, I figured it had something to do with crappy audio drivers for Windows.
I managed to fix it yesterday. Because of the kind of the fix, I don’t expect the audio drivers have anything to do with the tough nut to crack. I don’t skilled in why the poser is so much worse under Windows… I’m thriving to postulate it has to do with the graphics plan being more acting when Windows is management. But who knows?
Yesterday, I came across this page on Yahoo! Answers which hints at a fix, but doesn’t surely determine you what it is. Then I found these forums with a smock of residents discontented about the obstreperous. Inspiron 1520, 1521, and 1721 (and perhaps 1525?) users also seem to have the obstreperous. More machines may have a comparable unmanageable as well. Lots of threads seem to point to that there is no figuring out, but at the end of the day, this one points out expressly what it is. So, I went to the fore and tried it myself, and it worked .
Anyway, I unqualified to verify the fix, so here it is with pictures. Again, I have an Inspiron 1720, so these pictures are for that device. I swear by the Vostro 1700 is cute much the same. Inspiron 15xx machines can be immobilized in a nearly the same means, but there will be differences as to where the screws are and so forth. To carry out this fix, you’ll requisite a insignificant Phillips screwdriver, a direct-be in screwdriver or piddling pierce, and some electrical fillet. Be warned, you have to euphonious much take the computer all the way alone to get to the headphone jack on the lining, which is where we indigence to get. The whole article (disassembly, fix, and reassembly) took me a paltry less than an hour. Note that I am not answerable if you somehow carry out to cow your computer or anything else while later these instructions.
Q: I have a dell laptop inspiron 1721 it has microsoft windows XP professional. I'm actually thinking about restoring the whole thing b/c I think that will help things out. As of right now it has trouble just installing any Sims2 games let alone WoW - is it possible that my laptop can play WoW though?
798 MHz, 1.89 GB of RAM
and I believe the graphics is 128MB
I could be wrong about the last part, but I don't know much about laptops however trying to make an effort with figuring this out.
A: Ummm, what is the CPU and RAM?
E.G: I have 2.67GHz and 1G of RAM.
I can play WoW (Normal, BC and WotLK) without a problem but there is slight lag in cities like Ogrrimar (a major city).
Also what is your graphics card memory? It has to be at least 64mb.
