Third netbook's a draw successfully
I loved the fabrication of a netbook because I'm a writer who just needs basic word-processing, web and portability. Oh, and affordability -- I don't like paying $1900 for a negligible version of a Sony vaio.
I first tried buying a 9" Asus, which was miraculously portable -- but it was way too small to be practical, so I gave it to my 7 year old niece. I then got an Acer Aspire One that had a sport keyboard but which still was slightly too small. The niece will get this one too.
The HP 1000 series struck me as having the superlative keyboard, and I decided to get the 2140 because it has a classy aluminum case and some ruggedness.
It's charmed me a while to get used to the smaller screen. But I've finally started using it and adjusting to it. And it's giving me all the principal functionality I need, with great portability and the kind of aesthetics that establish you proud to own it.

stoppage away from HP!!
I bought this entity after reading all the great things from the reviews. upon receiving of this unit, it looks pronounced, and works fine for the first month and half.... then the unit begins to cloddish down, and finally reached it's untimely death. reloaded the os four times, but it keep having the same problems. I at length formated the hard drive and start from scartch.... hp chap service were no help at all, all they can tell me is to sent the unit back for repair...... the courtesy around time would be 7 days. if you want a unit that works, then get a full size laptop, don't get the mini note hard-cover. it's cheat for a very good reason..... :(
Discontinued due to serious WI-FI issues
I wanted a 2140 soprano-rez for a long time and finally bought one just before it was discontinued by HP. I was soooo on a high to get it as it is a sexy and slick looking little machine. I wanted to like this device so bad, but the 2140 has serious connection issues, in terms of WI-FI, and does not connect to many contrasting signals and routers. You can't just take it to a coffee shop, because there is at least a 50% unplanned it won't work with their router. It is a useless machine, as it has terrible WI-FI. Just do a search on Google that reads "2140 wireless problems", and you will find fat forum discussions of 2140 owners that have this same problem, or inability to sew wirelessly to the internet, and there is NO FIX available. The machine is fundamentally flawed and I be convinced of it was discontinued because of this flaw. HP took the machine back, and I still believe they are a good followers, but this machine is a dud.
Execute Travel Computer
I've habituated to this on three trips from the States to the Middle East (20+ hours in a level/airport each way).
- Keyboard: The keyboard (92%) is plenty big. I tried a baby's Acer (80-something% size) and it was WAY TOO SMALL. I haven't noticed a big argument between this 92% and my 100% on my home computer - which is a bigger HP laptop.
- Touch Pad: I impute to other reviews that didn't care for the touch pad, but I like it. I had to get used to where to put my digit be on the right side for scrolling, but that is very minor. I accidently touch it once in a while during typing, but I've found that representative to all touch pads on laptops.
- Battery: I did not opt for the larger battery, and I'm averaging at least 4 hours per mandate. I've spent tons of hours in planes and airports without access to an egress. I don't need the bigger battery. Save your money and opt just for the normal battery.
- Screen: This would be 5 STARS if the screen were higher resolution. I've heard the HD filter may come out later in the year, but don't wait. This is good enough for a travel computer - not actually good enough for a full-time computer.
This is a great travel computer and well worth the price.
Glassy metal casing and elegant design in a netbook form moneylender
Bought one of the first 2140s that shipped in February 2009. Have already charmed it on a 1 month trip to China. This is my 1st netbook, and 5th notebook that I have owned since 2002.
The portability and ease of understanding of the 10" form factor is great. The screen is bright, and when compared to other netbooks - the HP Mini 2140's metal outward makes it a stand out. I had a chance to sample and feel many other netbooks while in Hong Kong and while some of them may have a few things in their favor, I realized the HP 2140 was the best election for me.
No problems connecting to any wireless / wired networks in hostels / hotels / coffee shops. The split trackpad knob layout has not been a problem to adjust to. Both buttons have a nice rubbery caress/response. The quick battery recharge to 90% has been good. 6-apartment battery provides a good tilt, now I don't need to bring a CoolPad to cusp the keyboard!! The 1024x576 is a minor quibble. I can't imagine reading the subject-matter on the high-resolution 1366x768 display. Contrrary to some opinions, I enter the coating/glass/whatever that is on the screen - easy to clean, and I don't worry about pathetic it.
I have not tried an external monitor or printing with this netbook, so I am unable to animadversion on those aspects.
Soon - I will test the ExpressCard 54 slot with a Originative Labs audio card that I am using on another notebook. UPDATE - X-Fi Audio Xtreme be forthright has been tested and works!
Performance wise - only issues are a little lag if competition too much video and a couple of blue screens when too many Google Chrome tabs were present along with other programs. Memory overload of some sort. But easy to avoid, once one knows the limitations of the processor. Old the netbook to talk with a handheld SkyPE Ipevo phone in many spaces. Handy!
One annoyance (That I was aware of before buying) is that to use the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys one must use the FN key at the same prematurely. Which is swappable with the LEFT corner CTRL key (Not the RIGHT CTRL key, which would exhort it a one handed motion - unless I missed a setting) in the BIOs - but still infuriating - as the smaller screen requires more scrolling. The trackpad scroll works well though. Other netbooks have particular PAGE-UP/DOWN keys.
I also own an HP DV6000 series limited edition unblemished notebook - which is slick but -- after experiencing the aluminum/metal bleed for of the the HP Mini - I will say that more note/netbooks should be built with metal over plastic. Derive pleasure!
NOTE: This review is of the 6-cell version. This review is attached to the 3-chamber version on Amazon. Both are identical except for the battery size/life.

Frickn excessive netbook
This is an certainly great netbook, looks great, very comfy keyboard, piercing speakers, beautiful LED bright glass screen, and just an all around gifted machine.
Prominent Netbook, but has sound issues
I am no tech scholar but a simple laptop user. Here's my plain verdict on this netbook.
This is a stupendous lightweight netbook, perfect if you mainly use a laptop to browse the Net on the go. The only grouse is that the box speakers have sound issues like an occasional crackling well-built while playing music, talk, etc. The speakers are still powerful enough for a computer of this size. I don't have any other complaints on this wonderful netbook and I rapture that it is so very easy to carry around (the only problem I have with my MacBook Pro 17" notebook, but well of positively I knew it when I got it. I wanted a bigger screen and was ready to put up with the weight).

Often enthralling, occasionally frustrating
Perhaps the most excellently thing I can say about the HP mini 2140 after a 90-day shakedown cruise is that I use it more than I've against any laptop or computer. I move this thing around my home 10X a day, something I never did with bulkier laptops. On the down side, have noted a few informative limitations...well documented by other reviewers.
Battery life- If you want a cheerful, crisp display you'll need to set the battery on high performance. On this background, expect less than two hours tops.
Battery malfunction - Early on the freestyle shut down whenever the power cord was disconnected after charging. HP online strut was no help. I'm figuring the cause is overheating. If I mistakenly leave the laptop on plugged in overnight and detach the cord to go portable it often quits...abruptly. Battery shows no debit. Now I always end a session by selecting hibernate mode or shutting down and that's solved the difficult for now.
Itunes and photos - Have loaded photos with no problem. Itunes is something of a distress. It may be that the latest 9.0 Itunes release is heavy and balky and straining the Mini's smallest horsepower.
Video - As others have noted, don't expect stellar video show on the Mini. Youtube is ok and videos run but it's fairly choppy.
I've added an Asus dvd initiative (08d1s-u amazon $60.24) and an Altec lansing external rabble-rouser (im 237 orbit, amazon $27.40) The speaker is good...recommended. Very movables clarity for a baseball broadcast and reasonably good with music. The rope is too short, less than 12 inches, and it's easy to leave on accidentally and assassinate the three triple A batteries but otherwise a worthy accessory. The mini recognized and ran the Asus visible drive but keep in mind (as others have noted) this will occupy both usb ports. You can't get around this by splitting the mooring - at least I couldn't - because the Asus would only power up when directly plugged into both ports. Because the USB's are on alone sides of the Mini, plan on buying a USB port extension wire. The cables on the Asus are too short to easily span the keyboard to reach both ports.
I reckon with the Mini 2140 a well designed product with a few bugs and obvious limitations in briskness and performance. It's analogous to the trade-off between a pocket-sized digital camera vs. a full sized SLR. You'll see and occasionally curse the shortcomings but you'll take the thing everywhere and that's the value proposition.

Serious WIFI problems for the 2140
I wanted a 2140 acute-rez for a long time and finally bought one just before it was discontinued by HP. I was soooo aroused to get it as it is a sexy and slick looking little machine. I wanted to like this prime mover so bad, but the 2140 has serious connection issues, in terms of WI-FI, and does not connect to many opposite signals and routers. You can't just take it to a coffee shop, because there is at least a 50% conceivability it won't work with their router. It is a useless machine, as it has terrible WI-FI. Just do a search on Google that reads "2140 wireless problems", and you will find colossal forum discussions of 2140 owners that have this same problem, or inability to fuse wirelessly to the internet, and there is NO FIX available. The machine is fundamentally flawed and I suppose it was discontinued because of this flaw. HP took the machine back, and I still believe they are a good public limited company, but this machine is a dud.
I evident to buy the HP Mini. I cogitating it would be easygoing to find it. Most stores said that it was out of extraction for a month now. Capable fetish I called up computer stores first. The only bank that still had it was Electroworld Greenbelt 1 . They had 3 HP Mini 2140 formerly larboard. Call 892-9120 if you stand in want to buy. The HP Mini 2140 came with a Earth Tattoo. It made me believe that the SRP is a bit costly because of the Tattoo bunch.
But I am rather auspicious with my new HP Mini 2140. The oily cutlery aluminum dispatch makes it look luxurious.
It felt likeable as I typed somewhere else my updates. In items, I was qualified to draw nigh up with 4 blog entries during my 4 day halt in Singapore. That’s how docile it was to update. The assist of the HP Mini also helped as I manipulated photos. The HP Mini didn’t sink in fare with an likeness rewriter so I downloaded the Fotografix , a straightforward, unattached standalone photo leader-writer. Due to the little 10.1-inch display panel, I had some hot water resizing the photos but I somehow managed. It helped that I brought along my logitech wireless mouse. It made employment easier and more serviceable.
Unfortunately, this replica’s fail configuration includes a 3-chamber battery-operated which gave me under 2 hours of handling. It was not a big handle since I updated in my New Zealand pub flat. One can upgrade to the higher-function 6-apartment freestyle which will cost you another 5,000 pesos and add 5 more hours to your HP Mini, not to hint at extra clout.
Even if my other USB Seaport was utilized by my wireless mouse on the in fairness side of the HP Mini, there is another USB refuge on the left side where I can download my photos from the camera or my Go off the deep end video camcorder . I noticed that the HP Mini’s fan turned on as the netbook became hot but it is not as hot as my macbook so I found it slight.
How can I get my HP 2140 Mini Note to play Fallout 3?
Q: I am getting an Hp 2140 Mini Note for my birthday and I heard that it has a Via Chrome9 Graphics Card which cannot play Fallout 3. How can I upgrade this computer to do so.
Thank You.
-Dan
A: Dan, as the others have indicated, you are kind of "stuck".
Laptops, notebooks, netbooks, tablets... any portable computer of this type will typically not be "upgradable". This is because the GPU is soldered directly to the motherboard.
Some manufacturers will allow you to customize your portable at the time of purchase, however, I do not know of any manufacturer that is currently putting any GPU (graphics processing unit) into a netbook, or a small-size notebook that is capable of any serious gaming.
If you want a notebook that is capable of gaming, you will need to look for a larger-size (at least 15.4" screen) and do some research regarding GPU's. A good place to learn about laptops and GPUs and gaming is at http://www.notebookreview.com
You can also learn more about GPU's and what their native capabilities are at: http://www.notebookcheck.net
Good Luck - and Happy Birthday! :)
