Q: I'm buying a new laptop for school next year and am having a really hard time deciding what to get. I've been using a decrepit hp dv6000 since 2006, so I definitely need to upgrade my hardware.
Here's what I want:
I've decided on a budget of $2300. I'm studying to be a computer science major, so I expect that the specs should be pretty high. I want minimum 4gb ram, 256 mb video card, preferably more there, and a 2.5 ghz processor. I'm not sure how much I'll be traveling with it untethered, but would prefer a 25 watt processor, though that's not necessary. I really want a solid state hard drive. I'd prefer a screen around 16" I will be running both windows and ubuntu linux on the computer but it does not need to come with windows as my school provides me with a copy.
So far, I've done quite a bit of research. I like the dell studio xps 16 but the cnet review is not that glowing for it, and I'm concerned that it only has 2 usb ports, which are next to each other. I love the dell studio 15/17 especially for the design studio feature, but they have a poor video card and no available solid state hard drive. I like the hp pavilion hdx 18t premium, but the screen is quite large and I expect it to have a very poor battery life (also, there is no option for a single solid state hard drive, but only that in combination with a 5400 rpm drive). I've looked at the studio76 options, but I'm concerned that it would be too expensive to replace battery/power cable as there won't be generics and the solid state drives that they offer are so small. Any other suggestions?
I would never consider buying ANYTHING from apple. Ever.
A: Have you considered a Macbook pro?
The battery life on them with just one charging is at least four times longer than any of the laptop's you've mentioned here.
Also, you will have much greater security with a macbook than you would with a regular laptop.
If the need be you could always run windows on it via bootcamp, so you'd have the security of mac OS X and the versatility of windows.
The macbook pro 15" is with the budget you have.
I've got the 17", it's so shinny :P
Oh, I also considered the hp hdx 18t, I personally think it's an excellent choice if you're going to keep it plugged in every where you go because with the hour and twenty minute life span you'd barely be able to finish a movie.
