    Problems with the detailed chipset
Although my march past is for HP dv9500 which is just slightly different these models have the exact same hornet's nest.

First my battery completely died after just 9 months but not to worry the guarantee covered it. However the new battery is about to go, barely a year old, as well and I use the laptop almost exclusively as a desktop :S Then a moment ago May this year HP added this laptop to the battery recall program. Fasten together to the HP battery recall form: [...] Apparently the batteries were deemed unsafe by the U.S. Consumer Outcome Safety Commission.

Second, a while back there was a huge recall on HP and Dell laptops that occupied this nVidia chipset. Apparently nVidia used some sort of crappy substance in their 86x series GPUs which made them burn out due to high temperatures. You can read all about it here: [...] During that stretch this laptop (dv9500) was not under the recall and after just 2 months over the 1year benchmark warranty that my laptop came with my video chip died. HP offered individual ridiculous solutions for users on their message boards such as under-clocking the GPU and getting bettor ventilation for your laptop. I called several times to get this repaired for free but since my assurance was out I initially got refused the free repair. HP denied that the chip was gripped which was clearly not true. After demanding to speak to the CEO of HP I finally got through to a case administrator of some sorts who got me an extended warranty ($[...] around) which would be cover the repair as if it was under the commitment in the first place (which is another story - I tried to get an extended warranty while going abroad and was refused because apparently they don't cover repair overseas but only give phone stand up for - which later turned out to be not true since I got covered although I had to pay the shipping). Unfortunately I real overseas and had to pay around $[...] extra to get it shipped there and back, but that is way less than what would cost for a new motherboard and connection. Of course I got the exact same brand of GPU chip back so there is no telling when it will die again.
    Do Not Buy
HP have in effect messed up with this one - I will never buy another HP computer.
    DO NOT BUY THIS Pad!
You acquisition this laptop at risk, there is a lawsuit against NVidia for faulty graphics playing-card - Try to purchase a replacement GeForce 8600M graphics, unavailable! In ell - HP used cheap solder on the motherboard which causes components to crash between 1 month to over good 2 years! See the attached link, there are over 77 pages of problems with the pavilion DV9500 laptop and HP'S character service! Best yet, even if HP's fixed the laptop while in warranty - the problems will cook again within months! And if you're out of warranty, you're out of luck!

For After Effects and Photoshop work, along with World of Warcraft: HP Pavilion dv9500t or Macbook Pro?

Q: Coming this October, I plan on getting a new laptop (for the mobility), and I can't decide between the HP Pavilion dv9500t or the Macbook Pro. At the moment, I use a Compaq Presario V2000 with Windows XP. I will be doing some heavy After Effects and Photoshop work, working with DV video (and possibly HD video), and some light audio editing. Also, I plan to play World of Warcraft with it as well. I'm comfortable with Windows, but I can reasonably use Macs as well. I chose October because Vista SP1 is supposedly coming out then, as well as Apple's Leopard. I want this laptop to last me at least 2 years or so.

A: I would get the macbook Pro, by October Apple's new OS will be released. As a developer that has used it, it is in my opinion better than Vista. I do have to say I have used Vista as Well. Apple's computers are designed with built-in APIs designed to run things like AfterEffects and Photoshop. On Windows Adobe has to make there own frameworks, so they don't get the full power and speed of built-in APIs. Also Mac video cards have quartz extreme which makes post effects like what Photoshop does much faster and better looking.

Also Apple computers "Just work" with cameras and camcorders. You hook it up, and it sees it, all you have to do is hit record.

As or the life time of it, I have had a iBook G4 for four years, and it still runs fine. I'm actually running leopard on it. Also my PowerMac G5 has lasted 3 years with out repairs or defragging.
