built in speakers on toshiba laptop suddenly not working, how to fix?
Q: my built-in speakers on my toshiba satellite X205-S9349 are suddenly not working. There is no sound output in my game, itunes, or online content(i.e. youtube). I also have Windows Vista btw
A: Several possibilities:
Does it work if you plug in some external speakers/headphones to the headphone jack? If so, your internal speakers, or the amp are dead, and you'll need to get it serviced.
Toshiba laptops usually have a rotary volume control on the front or one side. It's easy to bump this with something and turn it right down without noticing. Double check it.
It could also be that Windows has lost/corrupted the driver for the sound card.
In XP, you can check the "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet in the Control Panel. Click the Audio tab, and see if the drop down menus list your audio hardware, or say something like "No Playback Devices". If the latter, your audio driver is broken, and may require a Windows reinstall to fix it.
In Vista, click "Hardware and Sound" in the Control Panel, then click "Manage Sound Devices" under "Sound".
I don't know exactly what the problem shows up like in Vista, because I haven't seen it on Vista yet, but make sure all the devices have green checks and say "Working".
